Average fee = (annual practitioner income target + annual practice costs) ÷ (working weeks × paid consultations per week). Use income before personal tax and costs excluding your own income. Use all amounts excluding GST.
Worked example
All amounts use the same selected currency. 90,000 income + 30,000 costs = 120,000 revenue. Across 46 weeks and 20 paid consultations a week, that is 920 consultations and an average fee of 130.43. These are example inputs, not market rates.
For broader guidance on costs, value and setting prices, see business.gov.au’s pricing strategy guide.
Questions practitioners ask
Does this tell me what I should charge?
It calculates the average fee needed for your inputs. It does not measure demand, competitor fees or the value of your service. Use it as a starting point, then consider your service mix and business circumstances.
Can nutritionists, dietitians and naturopaths use it?
Yes. It models consultation revenue for an Australian private practice. Use your own costs and paid consultations. If you sell products or programmes, this simple model does not include that revenue.
What about GST, rebates and initial consultations?
All money inputs and outputs exclude GST. The tool does not decide your GST obligations or rebate eligibility. It calculates a blended fee across paid consultations; it does not set separate initial and follow-up fees. Use expected paid sessions, not every available booking slot.
